Journal entry April 2010:
I woke up feeling pretty good. Finally. Last weekend, I sat out on the deck and got a bad allergy reaction from all the flowering trees and new green leaves. You’d think the government labs that genetically engineer such bountiful corn yields could figure out pollen free trees for us urban folk.
Good thing, I had to go grocery shopping. I popped in the shower. Those grab bars the nurse from Office on the Aging got me sure make this safer.
I got myself amplified, magnified and mobilized for the day. Darn! My right ear piece isn’t working.
I drove right over to the ear clinic. The med tech found the problem. Ear Wax. She cleaned it up and told me because of my bad eyes to come over anytime and she’d clean my hearing aids. Lovely lady.
On to the groceries. My new medically correct diabetic shoes sure make walking easier. I do wish the foot clinic had delivered them with a long shoe horn. It’s going to cost me at least $30 to get one and avoid the pain of bending over.
What a hassle. I usually have an instant breakfast smoothie. Wow! The price of fruit and yogurt went up again. I saw The Dunkin Donuts cabinet was offering three rolls for a buck. So I bought a tasty affordable breakfast.
I got to remember to get cheaper pills from the doc. I stopped taking the Diabetes pills he prescribed because the FDA announced they increase the risk of stroke by 45%. After that the insurance company raised my co-pay by a 1000%. That makes my cost for one script more than a year’s Medicare premiums.
On to the frozen food aisle. Without pills, I’d better not cheat on my diet anymore. I pulled out my LED magnifier and began the job of reading those USDA labels. Meatloaf and mixed veggies is good. But has two days worth of salt. Chicken with noodles and a day’s worth of broccoli is good. But has three days worth of saturated fat. It takes a long time to buy a week’s healthy dinners.
On the way home, I passed the new baseball stadium. All winter the city has rushed construction on this. Old or new, who cares. The best seat in the house for a ball game is my 52 inch flat screen with surround sound.
I don’t know if the city council is being paid off by somebody. But there doesn’t seem to be enough money and workers to fix potholes. Its two weeks since the snow stopped they get bigger and bigger. You can’t avoid them and my auto insurance won’t pay for a new tire if I blow one out in a pothole.
I got home. Hot and bothered, I flopped into my big recliner and started watching commercials I had recorded on my cable box DVR.
My agitation slowly abated. The American Dream is alive and well!
Offices filled with happy workers in their cubicles sharing energy drinks to overcome afternoon drowsiness. Laughing children and parents play Frisbee in sunlit grassy parks with no irritating sneezes or bloody scrapes. Joyful Senior citizens jolt down city nature trails on mountain bikes without pain in creaky knees.
Just wondering? Maybe we need more DVRs! It sure makes me a proud American to know that with just a click of a mouse, the US Postal Service can deliver Free Samples of The Good Life right to my door.
